August 07 2007 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPSWOW, What a World Championship
First of we got to see both old and new friends:
We visited with many Keichu folks
We were able to see Soke Karl Marx Founder of our style
We saw Danny Gilliland, the Prewetts, Eldridge Conley (highest ranking Keichu Black Belt besides Soke)
Our Students competed: both Enrique Leon and Tristan Thompson were in attendance. They each won 1st in their Kata Division and 1st in their sparring division. 4 World championships.
Sensie Jeff won the Black Belt men kata division and was 2nd in fighting (he lost to Adrian Galvan who eventually won the Grand Championship).
We made new friends in Indiana, Ohio, Louisiana and other places.
Your instructor was also elected to the USKA Hall of Fame. This is a great honor and many never make it. It is for the Best of the Best and for the Movers and Shakers of the Martial Arts in all the USKA.
We ate great food and enjoyed the city and the people.
Enrique and Tristan, also attended the National points award ceremony. Enrique, Tristan, and Matt Fach each won a division and received 1st Place awards. Tristan was fortunate to be one of the few to win 2 divisions, and he received the All American patch for that honor.
We are excited by all of our students and look forward to creating winning opportunities for each of you, whether it be in tournament or in other areas of your life.
Others that finished in the Top 10 included:
Ken Middaugh 5th Sr Kyu Kata
Matt Fach 7th in Sparring

Ins't it amazing that God can use us even in stuff like Karate.
We feel so Blessed.

February 20 Toni's Black Belt TestWell we all went to Nipomo, Ca to participate in Toni's Test. The board included Soke, Sensei Jeff, MrMr, Mrs. Crothers, Mr. Hickman, Heather Christensen, Rebecca Prewett, Miriam Prewett.
Well that is enough Black Belts to scare anyone to death. On top of that Toni was the only candidate and she was really nervous.
She proceeded to perform all here material, using Jaymie and flinging her around like a ragdoll on several occasions.
Thanks to Jaymie for being a good Uki. She now knows what a test is like.
In the end the board met and discussed and awarded that Black Belt to Toni. I guess that means we all have to learn her last name and how to pronounce it properly as well.

This is a good year to join the USKA, it looks like a couple of tournaments will be added to the schedule, this will allow
you to attend tournaments in California. Every year we have several students that compete for points in the national point competition and end up placing in the top 10 within the entire USKA. So having added California tournaments will help.
I believe one is scheduled for December 2nd and that Mrs. Prewett from 5 Cities Keichu has agreed to hold a tournament in February. Only USKA members are included in the Final Point Standings. See us if you have questions on this.
Again we always want to say what a privilege it is to teach both our adult and our youth students.
Lord Willing I will see you in Class

April 03 2006 National NotesFantastic Competition and Comraderie demonstrated at the Nationals.
Our team did a great job and we are proud of everyone.
Because of all the competitors, I did not get all the results yet. I do know some of them. The students I was able to watch presented high quality Katas and fought great. Remember this is the most competitive USKA event. Every competitor had to qualify, so it is really the best of the best....and it takes courage to compete.
Make sure you congratulate everyone whether they trophied or not.
Our studio had more places and won more trophies than any other time in our history. Our parents and students helped the tournament and represented Mr. Crothers and myself and Keichu Do with great attitudes. Thanks to all...
I know we had a least 8 National Champions and others placed as well.
I will post the results soon.
I posted some pictures too.

We had a great time and about half of us stayed to the end and went to eat with the Prewett Dojo and the the Summey's from Arizona. I introduced the Summey's to Carman music and they were jazzed. We play a lot of Carman in the school.
Next up Nationals. Train, Train , Train
January 24 USKA RegionalsThe Regionals in Palm Springs was held on January 21,2006. This is a Nationals qualifier and students attended from Arizona and New Mexico as well as California. Also some attended form the USKK in addition to the USKA .
My favorite time of the whole tournament was when Siah Nix, a tall Afro American Black Belt with long dread locks, took me aside and told me he wanted to get to know me better. We have been exchanging friendhip smiles for about 5 years, what a great witness opportunity. I look forward to that day when we chat. You can pray that God would go before me and prepare the path.
We had some great and courageous competitors at this event. Parents and students we know it takes a huge commitment to even go. We believe tournaments can be important in student training. This is why we compete, to test ourselves, and our abilities under a competitive situation. Remember that even those that are not winning a trophy are learning from the experiences.
So here is how the event fared for our students.

MrMr November 15 State ChampionshipsWell the California State Championships were an extraordinary event. There were more competitors than I have seen at a USKA event in a long time. Naturally more competitors make for more competition. Some of the Black Belts present came to honor Mrs. Evans-Colgan for 40 years of Martial Arts Training. We saw some awesome competitions, with the 3 Firsts by your Instructor right up there, he also won the Grand Championship for all Black Belt Kata and Weapons. Others really broke the barriers and accomplished great feats as well. In addition some of you stuck it out till the end, that means a lot to us, especially when we are still competing. Here are the results as reported to me (everyone should thank Michele Slivnik, who has provided the results to me for the last 3 tournaments). I am sure she had help from many to compile this list.
August Slivnik: 2nd weapons, 2nd kata, 1st sparring Nicole Slivnik: 4th kata Corey Slivnik: 3rd weapons, 4th kata, 2nd sparring Ann Huttsell: 1st kata Matt Fach: 1st Kata, 2nd sparring Marti Bass 5th weapons, 3rd kata, 3rd sparring Brien Middaugh 3rd weapons, 2nd kata, 3rd sparring Zachary Middaugh 4th weapons, 2nd kata, 3rd sparring Ken Middaugh 1st Kata Greg Horak 4th Kata Jaymie Horak 4th Kata Victoria Tabor 1st kata, 2nd sparring Joseph Harrington Medal Nick Kafont 3rd kata William Morton 2nd kata, 1st sparring Richard Morton 3rd kata David Lantz 2nd kata Zachariah Dotts Medal Madison Maler 2nd Kata Lonny Sapikowski 3rd Black Belt Sparring Lizeth Ramirez 2nd Kata, 3rd Sparring
Wow great job to all the competitors and their parents for keeping them focused. Parents have a big job at these larger tournaments keeping the focus up during long waits.
Anyone that placed 4th and above is qualified for Nationals. For those that are earning points for the 2005-2006 competition year awards points For the state championships are 1st 25 points, 2nd 20 points, 3rd 15 points, 4th 7 points (I think).
Let Mr Crothers know if you are considering going to Nationals.
MRMR October 28 Latest NewsI am happy to report that Mrs. Crothers and myself were able to go on a great nearly 2 week vacation.
We visitied several National Parks including Bryce, Zion, Canyonlands, and the Grand Canyon. We also camped at 2 great Utah State Parks: Kodachrome Basin and Dead Horse Point. Two of our highlights included the awesome view at dead horse point, and hiking in slot canyons. It was just fantastic to see the majesty of God's work in these various places.
Speaking of God's work. God's desire for each of us is to be generous. That has some various interpretations, including being available to others, serving, listening to God's direction in our lives. Using our talents and abilities in a way that is pleasing to the Lord is really important. We even mention it in the Keichu Bow, we would rather Pray for someone than fight them. Well this all leads me to an update on the Karate School in Louisiana that was affected by Katrina. First off, Mr. Dupaquier sent me an email thanking each and every one that reached out to him. On Mr. Dupaquiers first open day of class after the Hurricane he had 1(one) student attend. On his second day he had 2 (two) students attend. Mr. Dupaquier probably had 200-300 students before the hurricane. This is just one example of the devastion that has occured. Please consider giving to the fund that was set up for this. See one of the previous entries on this site. Remember we can have an impact, but we will have to be willing to sacrifice some. This business will need support for a while until they and the entire city can recover. Please consider giving again. Send directly to:
MKTC FUND 4615 Shreveport Hwy Pineville, LA 71360 I am also going to set up a can to collect change and send it before Christmas. If you are like me you have a lot of change hanging around, if we all give it will add up.
In case you think I am harping on this, remember we still have: students, a dojo, schools, houses, roads, stores, TV, Phones, Electricity, etc..
I personally believe that one donation will not save these people, this neighborhood etc...That is why I am harping. Mr. Mr.

They were great at the test. September 06 Targeted Dojo Donation OpportunityStudents and Parents: I know we are all looking for ways to help those in need from the Katrina Disaster. We were looking for a way to help some Louisiana based karate organization. This past weekend we received information regarding Mandeville Karate in Louisiana. Mandeville is very near Lake Ponchatrain and the city was ravaged during the hurricane and floods. We have decided to communicate this opportunity to our students. Let me tell you a little bit about Mr. Joe Dupaquier. Joe is one of the greatest USKA competitors I have ever seen. He is fearless. Most of all he is an awesome individual that has mentored and challenged and grown many students. Mr. Dupaquier is a USKA Hall of Fame member, an active contributor to Local and National Martial Arts scenes. He has organized the World Championships for several years. He is married and I believe has two children. As a Christian, Joe was the primary force to get a Christian based demo presented several times at the World Championships. He has advised us on business related issues for running a dojo. This year when Mr. Crothers fought for the Grand Championship at Nationals he fought James Lee who is one of Joe Dupaquier's students. I tell you all of this to bring relativity to the people and the place. I know that we have all given to help support the recovery from this disaster. I don't know about you, but when I give to the Red Cross or at our church to support the victims , I really do not know where my donations go. In this case any donations will go to help rebuild a business that promotes values we all want our youth to have. Please give this prayerful consideration. shown below is the email I received from Mr. Gilliland (the Keichu instructor from Louisiana that came in January for a seminar) MrMr Friends,
I would first ask you thank God that our friends in Mandeville were spared from Hurricane Katrina. I am sure that most of you know that Joe Dupaquier and his family got out safely. Their home received only superficial damage and the dojo even less. Of course, electricity is out, trees are down, roads are impassable and communications difficult.
I drove through Joe’s town and neighborhood with him a few days ago. He was truly blessed.
However, it will be quite a while before the residents of Mandeville will have a return to normal life. His student base will be unable to support his dojo for quite some time. I am asking for your help. I am asking, because Joe would never think of doing so himself. In fact, he would try to keep me from writing this.
I realize that in the aftermath of such a disaster, one karate dojo does not seem that important. I also realize that most have already given generously to the national relief funds. However, this is my friend. Your friend. I know from personal experience that he would be the first to help me. You probably know this as well.
I am quite simply asking that we do our best to help Joe keep his dojo open, until the day that his students can return. You know that he will take over from there.
An account is being set up to send donations to Joe. If you can help, make checks payable to:
MKTC FUND 4615 Shreveport Hwy Pineville, LA 71360
Thank you, Danny Gilliland Rapides School of Keichu Ryu Karate USKA Louisiana State Representative. (318) 641-1002
August 26 In house fun and picturesI don't know about all of you, but we had a BLAST at the In house...
I have posted some pictures. Parents and students, remember you can view your pictures and copy them for your enjoyment.
We are not sure if you liked the Chanbara competition, so let us know
Keep up the good progress. August 01 2005 In House TournamentCheck out the schedule for the in house tournament. It is scheduled for August 20th.
You can enter up to 4 events: Kata, Sparring, Weapons and Chanbara.
This is the first time we will offer Chanbara. It is a fun and exciting event. The contestants use Nerf Style swords and spar each other. There are controlled rules and regulations. We need enough to sign up to make this interesting. This event is held at large USKA events like National's and World's.
The in house tournament has been one of the students and parents favorite events. Sign up at the school, we will have a sign up sheet available. We will start at 10am and go until done.
If you plan on attending get signed up right away. This will help us know how many trophies we will need......

Awesome job by everyone
June 20 All Nighter thank yousSpecial thanks to the parents that helped with the allnighter. This is the one event we do, where we throw everyting to the wind and let the kids just have a blast. It takes special patience and is really hard when one of your kids is there too. Students make sure you thank those parents again when you see them. Thanks to the advanced students that helped out too. When you assume any leadership role in life, no matter how small, it does matter. Parents, thanks for letting your precious children attend. We know that many were tired on Saturday, I bet they would say it was worth it. Next year's is only a year away. |
